The friendship and cooperation protocol with Maputo is being renewed. One specific focus for work will be the urban air quality monitoring network, with the Barcelona Public Health Agency providing support for the design of the Mozambique network.

The agreement will provide support for various projects, including the management of the new Zimpeto Market.

The ties between the two cities go back twenty years, when the capital of Mozambique and much of the country were hit by severe flooding. The collaboration was made firm five years later, and over the last fifteen years has involved work in various spheres such as health, waste management, the climate crisis, markets, libraries, archives and urban resilience.

Visits to various projects

Over the last few days of May and the first few days of June, the Fourth Deputy Mayor and head of the Area for Social Rights, Global Justice, Feminism and LGBTI, Laura Pérez, is visiting Maputo. Pérez has had a meeting with the head of the Municipal Council, Ernesto Comiche, enabling the Friendship Protocol to be renewed. The trip has also helped stress the importance of collaborating in the design of the air quality network.

The trip also includes visits to projects being carried out by organisations such as Enginyeria Sense Fronteres, Arquitectura Sense Fronteres, the Red Cross and the UN Sexual and Reproductive Health Agency (UNFPA). Respectively, these are working in the spheres of sustainable development, housing and land parcelling, care for women who suffer violence and programmes to combat gender violence.
