Agreement with the state to accommodate 50 migrants from the Canary Islands

Over 15,500 migrants reached the coast of the Canary Islands in 2020, having travelled there in flimsy vessels known as ‘pateras’ or ‘cayucos’. The influx is causing a humanitarian crisis on the archipelago. Given the situation, the City Council has reached an agreement with the Spanish government to offer a municipal facility for fifty migrants from the Canary Islands.

The fifty people who will be transferred to the city have particularly vulnerable profiles. They will be housed in an entire municipal shelter, in line with the capacity restrictions for Covid-19.

When they arrive, social care professionals will take their basic personal details and provide primary care to cover their immediate basic needs. This includes food, liquids, medical and psychological care, as well as a needs assessment for the medium term.

This will allow for an evaluation of their psychological and emotional state, their social state, possible situations of violence, health issues etc. The process also seeks to identify people in need of specialised proactive follow-up and, if necessary, the formalisation of an asylum request.

The City Council will provide accommodation, with the Spanish government to cover the costs relating to social care, which will be managed by the organisation Accem.

Barcelona, city of shelter

This is not the first time the city has offered the state its collaboration in the provision of shelter for migrants. Following the fire that destroyed the Moria refugee camp in Greece in September, the City Council offered a municipal facility to relocate 55 people.
