Today, Barcelona held the “I’m not afraid” demonstration for freedom. The general public, who filled the streets with messages of solidarity after the terrorist attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils, took to the streets again today, with the unanimous message that peace is the best response to violence.

A total of 1,130 organisations from 28 countries on five continents joined the demonstration, where they experienced moments of fraternity and human kindness, with embraces between people of different origins, ethnic groups, races and religions, showing us that the unity of people is the best defence against hatred.

Words, flowers and music for peace

The demonstration’s leading group, with 75 representatives from security forces and emergency services, along with organisations and local residents from the Rambla, marched down Passeig de Gràcia, from the Jardinets de Gràcia to  Plaça de Catalunya. Behind a banner that read “I am not afraid”, it was these groups of people who deserved special thanks for their response during and after the attacks. They were accompanied by human-rights and anti-racism organisations, with representatives from the various governmental administrations and thousands of people following behind.

The city’s colours of red, yellow and white were visible all along the march, with volunteers handing out thousands of flowers to participants, and with floral arrangements on the stage in Plaça de Catalunya. The demonstration ended with a closing ceremony of poetry and music, featuring selected readings of Federico García Lorca and Josep Maria de Sagarra, along with a performance of El cant dels ocells [The Song of the Birds] by Pau Casals, a symbol of peace and freedom.

Thanks to everyone for the support you have shown us in recent days. Thanks to everyone for making Barcelona residents feel that they are not alone. The city will now be stronger than ever. Because we are not afraid and because we are a city of peace.
