International Museum Day goes virtual

The traditional open days offered every year at the city’s museums for International Museum Day take on an open screen format this year as the event goes virtual. Dozens of events and activities will be available on museum websites and social media from 16 to 18 May, while Museum Night has been put back to 14 November.

The site for International Museum Day details all the initiatives being organised for the occasion by the various facilities. Examples include:

  • El Born CCM has created an exclusive website and will be offering activities on social media.
  • The Museu d’Història de Barcelona will be offering the lecture by Rana Alhussin ‘Barcelona under reconstruction: post-war public spaces. The opening of Avinguda de la Catedral (1939–1958)’ on 18 May, at 7 pm.
  • The Museu del Disseny will be offering various family activities, such as a treasure trail and a museum memory game.
  • The History Archive is offering a trivia competition with questions that can be answered by looking for information on its website.
  • Montjuïc Castle will also be running a contest on its Facebook, with two guided tour invitations up for grabs.
  • The Museum of Ethnology and World Cultures will be offering two live activities on its Facebook on 18 May: the interactive guided tour “Les cares de Barcelona” and a special “Trencadís literari: La Rambla de les floristes”, with Martí Gironell interviewing Jordi Prat to talk about Josep Maria de Sagarra’s classic.
  • The Frederic Marès Museum will be offering brief videos with various collaborators explaining their favourite pieces from the collection.
  • The Fundació Joan Miró is offering a stroll and a virtual tour, plus various family activities.
  • The Picasso Museum is offering virtual tours of its collection and courtyards, along with a competition.
  • The Barcelona Centre of Contemporary Art – Fabra i Coats (CAC) and the Fàbrica de Creació are posting two new exclusive videos.
  • La Capella is offering a virtual guided tour with Pere Llobera.
  • La Virreina Centre de la Imatge is also offering a virtual guided tour, with Valentín Roma.
  • The Reial Monestir de Santa Maria de Pedralbes will be offering activities on social media, including a trivia game and a pairs game.
  • The Archaeology Service will be offering 3D reconstructions of the four domus of Bàrcino.
