Municipal nursery schools: pre-enrolment and the school year to begin on 12 September

The 2022-2023 school year gets under way at municipal nursery schools on 12 September, maintaining the current calendar and ending on 14 July. The Barcelona Municipal Institute of Education (IMEB) has agreed with trade unions on a moratorium for the school calendar, providing enough time to negotiate and adapt the needs of the school calendar while meeting the requisites of the service for families and the labour rights of staff. The pre-enrolment process gets under way on 5 May with 4,460 places available, divided into 607 groups at the 103 municipal nursery schools.

More support for infants with special education needs and a new itinerant nursing service for the next school year

The IMEB will be boosting its support for infants with special education needs through a 64% increase in resources in this area (funding for all services here should be 470,000 euros for the next school year). The extra funding means more support hours from professionals to help infants with specific needs.

An itinerant nursing service will also be introduced to improve specialised support for infants with severe disabilities and/or severe health and medical needs. This service will advise and train education teams in specific responses to the medical and health needs of infants in the school environment. It will also provide direct support for infants where they need to be accompanied by a specialist. The service is expected to provide between 5 and 15 hours of service a week, with a maximum annual volume of 1,150 hours.
