Restrictions at the Túnel de la Rovira to improve safety

Work is currently being carried out to improve safety and energy efficiency in the tunnel, which connects the Baix Guinardó and Carmel neighbourhoods. The work includes the excavation of three evacuation galleries, the renewal of security features and the installation of fire detection systems.

The new stage of the work has meant traffic restrictions since 23 March, with the descending side of the tunnel to be completely closed for four months as work is carried out 24 hours a day. In August 2025 the work will move to the ascending side, which will be completely closed for a month.

The main reason for the work is safety. The road is also to be resurfaced, lighting replaced with LED technology and improvements made to the ventilation system. Water filtration issues will also be solved, with drainage renewed to ensure it operates at an optimal level.

The project represents an effort to adapt an infrastructure from 1987 to current standards and turn it into a safer modern tunnel. The overall investment for the work is 17.4 million euros.

Closures at night in the ascending tunnel
