Improvements to navigational safety at the Olympic Port

Work got under way this week to replace the lateral seamarks in front of the Somorrostro beach, which help vessels to manoeuvre when entering or leaving the port. The work should take three weeks and involves a budget of nearly 200,000 euros.

The work is being carried out with the help of a crane mounted on a boat, plus a team of divers, without disrupting navigation at the port. The navigation of inbound and outbound vessels will only be affected when mooring and unmooring the boat with the crane. This will take around 15 minutes at 7 am and at 2 pm, from Monday to Friday.

The lateral seamarks are a type of tubular metal buoy, anchored to the seabed and protruding from the surface. They indicate the sides of navigation channels for vessels entering or leaving the mouth of the port, which is why they are coloured and feature luminous elements to help guide boats when manoeuvring.

These safety elements need to be renewed due to structural damage sustained during storms in recent years, as well as wear and tear caused by marine conditions.
