Fira Barcelona consolidates the present by looking to the future

Fira Barcelona continues with its record numbers and is set to close out 2019 with a turnover in excess of 215 million euros, some 12% more than budgeted for and nearly 15% more than in 2017, a comparable year in terms of its calendar of trade fairs.

In 2018 the trade fair company’s turnover topped 200 million euros, a figure set to be surpassed this year despite a complex scenario and strong competition. The good results can be explained by the positive evolution of Fira Barcelona’s own fairs, events organised by other operators and the strategy of jointly organising fairs in other countries.

There’s also optimism when it comes to the years ahead due to the variety of major events already scheduled and the fact that the company will be assuming the management of the Barcelona International Convention Centre (CCIB) at the Fòrum from 2021 onwards.

A strategic plan for venues is also in place and is being backed by Catalan institutions through the company Fira 2000. The plan anticipates a revamp to the Montjuïc venue for 2029, coinciding with centenary of the Universal Expo in 1929.

Besides improving facilities, the transformation of the complex at Plaça d’Espanya will also mean benefits for citizens, such as better connections between the neighbourhoods of Font de la Guatlla and Poble-sec, the construction of public housing, street calming in Av. Reina Maria Cristina and broader use of spaces for start-ups and cultural activities.

The strategic plan also includes the extension to the Gran Via venue, with more than 60,000 square metres of additional space for 2024. The goal is to offer congress space with a metropolitan mentality, offering space from the Besòs to the Llobregat rivers (from the Fòrum site to the Gran Via site respectively).

2019, a record year

Over 150 fairs, congresses and other events of a corporate, social and cultural nature have been held in 2019, with nearly 1,100 activities organised within the framework of the fairs.

This year also saw the renewal (until 2022 at least) of the IBTM World, the leading fair in business tourism, as well as deals to bring leading global fairs in marine products and the audio-visual industry from 2021.

In terms of activities abroad, Fira Barcelona has jointly organised fairs in countries such as Cuba, Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Japan and USA. It has also collaborated on the design of venues in Santiago de Chile, Cartagena de India (Colombia), Agra (India) and Addis Ababa (Ethiopia).
