Boost to transform L’Escocesa into a social, economic and cultural housing hub
All of the public heritage will be recovered at the factory site of L’Escocesa, in Poblenou, with the Klein unit to be turned into a driver for social and economic transformation through the social and solidarity economy (SSE) through an investment of 7.5 million euros. The activity in this unit comes in addition to the Johnston and Foseco units, currently operating as art factories, and the future incubator for food tech companies in the Shield unit. The Paul and Birkhead units will also be regained, together with the Steegmann unit, to be turned into assisted living flats with complementary services.
The municipal project entails mobilising 11,538 square metres for social, economic and cultural activity in the heart of the 22@ nord area, with an overall investment of nearly 51.8 million euros.
A public tender process to be launched at the start of 2026 will see the Klein unit become a driver for social and economic transformation, strengthening the presence of the social and solidarity economy in the city and offering a replicable model of collective management, sustainability and territorial integration.
This space of 1,391 square metres will be collectively managed by cooperatives committed to cooperative activity, the energy transition and social transformation, with work expected to start in the last quarter of next year.
Art factories
The activity at the Klein unit comes in addition to the Johnston and Foseco units, with over 2,200 square metres devoted to facilities for art residencies and the production of contemporary art, managed by the Associació d’Idees EMA. Both spaces offer a base for over 30 resident artists with access to studios and individual or shared workshops, and take part in a public programme of events, open calls and ongoing training.
Incubator for companies in the food tech sector
The project has been drafted to activate the Shield unit in the mid-term. This unit has 2,170 square metres, with the intention being for it to become a food innovation hub combining the worlds of cuisine, science and technology.
Recovery of spaces at the Paul and Birkhead units
Recovered through a judicial order, together with the Steegman unit these are conceived as a future centre of inclusion and social cohesion, the goal being to promote communal housing, training through art and labour insertion through new activities. Currently in the consultation stage with the sector, the housing project will occupy over 4,500 square metres.
