More resources to prevent sexual violence in night-life areas

The City Police have established four permanent safe routes for people to get to the nearest public transport stops in different night-life areas, the goal being to prevent and detect cases of sexual violence. The routes have been created at the sea front, in Poblenou, Paral·lel and Gràcia/Sarrià – Sant Gervasi. The corps is also working towards safe routes in all night-life areas in Barcelona.

The measure builds on the safe routes created for large events since 2020, including local festivals, music festivals, New Year’s Eve, Midsummer’s Eve etc.

Patrols assigned to this service take a pro-active and dynamic approach, paying special attention to any situation involving sexual aggression or harassment, also liaising with heads of private security at night-life venues.

More training for night-life staff

The safe routes are part of a joint responsibility drive with night-life venues taking on board the gender perspective. In this respect, the City Police and the Area for Feminism are training staff working in the night-life sector so that they can prevent and detect situations involving sexual violence.

Nearly 90 people have received specialised training on how to detect possible aggressions, how to respond when they occur, what support to offer the victim and other matters relating to current legality. Training is ongoing and will be extended to other services operating in public space at night.

New purple point at the Somorrostro beach

Barcelona City Council has also set up a point at the Somorrostro beach to provide information and advice relating to sexist and LGBTI-phobic violence and detect possible abusive relationships and violence in public space.

The purple point is staffed by four people and will be open from 5 August, providing service on Fridays and Saturdays and every weekend through August until the first weekend in September, from 11 pm to 3 am.
