As from 9 July it is obligatory to wear a face mask in Catalonia in all indoor and outdoor public spaces, even if it is possible to maintain safety distances between people.

Face masks are now mandatory for everybody over the age of six:

  • On public transport, inside vehicles and at stations and outdoor stops.
  • In public streets and open-air spaces, even if it is possible to keep a safety distance of 1.5 metres between people.
  • In any indoor space used by or open to the public, even if it is possible to keep a safety distance of 1.5 metres between people.

Non-compliance with the measures may result in fines, in line with the applicable sectoral legislation.

Exceptions

People with respiratory problems, disabilities, dependency or any medical grounds not to wear face masks for health reasons are not obliged to wear them. At the same time, their use is not mandatory when doing sport, eating or drinking, or when in a regular established group taking part in a summer activity programme.

How to handle face masks properly

Putting on and taking off masks correctly is fundamental to avoiding the spread of Covid-19:

  1. Wash your hands before putting on the face mask and ensure that it covers your mouth and your nose properly.
    2. Once you have put it on, do not touch it. If you do, wash your hands well.
    3. When taking it off, hold the strands that keep it in place and do not touch the part which may be contaminated.
    4. Wash your hands straight afterwards.

Damp masks should always be replaced.
