'Bach Project' comes to Mercat de les Flors

The Mal Pelo dance company has created a tetrology on the Baroque music of the German composer Johann Sebastian Bach. The last few years have seen the study of counterpoint and its structure at the centre of the choreographic and stage research of María Muñoz and Pep Ramis, together with the collaborators who were part of the study and the creations.

Programme:

  • Highlands
    From 6 to 9 May
    A stage show with the same group of 16 performers. A choreographic and dramatist take on a few excerpts from the Cantatas and Partitas (with an emphasis on the Chaconne version for four voices and violin) a several pieces from the Art of the Fugue by J. S. Bach.
  • Concert with the violinists Joel Bardolet and Jaume Guri
    8 May
    Joel Bardolet, who has been collaborating with Mal Pelo since 2016, offers a programme reflecting on work on Bach created over the last few years and which has strengthened the artistic relationship between Joel Bardolet and Mal Pelo.
  • On Goldberg Variations / Variations
    13 and 14 May
    A group show for seven performers on the music of the French-American composer Dan Tepfer, who will be interpreting the Goldberg Variations together with his own improvisations on them.
  • Inventions
    14 May
    A show for unique sites (non-theatre spaces) for 12 performers, divided up into a quartet of dances, a string quartet and a quartet of lyrical voices. A creation with live music in places that are specially noted for their acoustics, space and history, with Mal Pelo offering a specific talk appropriate to the place and its spirit. Inventions is part of the Grec 2020 programme.
  • Bach, by María Muñoz
    15 May
    A solo from María Muñoz that premiered in 2004, on The well-tempered clavier, which she has performed in several versions and presented around the world.
  • Bach, by Federica Porello
    16 May
    A solo from María Muñoz, this time represented by the dancer Federica Porello.
  • Round table
    16 May
    A space for dialogue between the choreographer Maria Muñoz, the dancer Federica Porello and the director of Mercat de les Flors, Àngels Margarit, on transmission and legacy in dance pieces based on the solo Bach tour María Muñoz has been giving so far, a reflection enshrined in the goals of the European DOPODO project.

The Mal Pelo company

Formed in 1989 by María Muñoz and Pep Ramis, the Mal Pelo dance company base their work on ongoing language research. Their first years involved numerous tours (Europe, United States, Middle East, Canada and South America). In 2001, Pep Ramis and María Muñoz launched L’animal a l’esquena, a multidisciplinary creation and exchange centre in a farm located in Celrà (Girona).

Mal Pelo is the recipient of, among other things: the 2002 National Dance Prize, awarded by the Catalan government; the 2009 National Dance – Creation Prize, awarded by the Ministry of Culture; the 2017 Barcelona City Dance Prize for her performance of the piece Bach and Federica Porello’s intepretation and the 2018 Critics Prize for the show Bach and Federica Porello’s interpretation.
