Barcelona Crea: grants to drive artistic research and innovation in the city

The Barcelona Institute of Culture is promoting the Barcelona Crea 2021 grant call, providing support for creation and keeping up its backing for culture in the city. The 170 grants are worth 6,000 euros each and are organised into eight categories: literature, music, audio-visuals, scripts, popular culture, performing arts, visual arts and art and science.

The grants first appeared in 2020 as a special measure, replacing the City of Barcelona Awards and designed to help mitigate the effects of the Covid-19 crisis. The success of the first edition has meant the initiative will now become an ordinary grant call. In addition, this year’s process also reintroduces the City of Barcelona Awards 2021.

A million euros for 170 grants

The Barcelona Crea grants award up to 1,020,000 euros for new creative projects which are closely linked with the city and the metropolitan area. There are eight categories:

  • Creation in performing arts (42 grants)
  • Creation in visual arts (30 grants)
  • Creation in music (23 grants)
  • Creation in audio-visuals (15 grants)
  • Popular culture (8 grants)
  • Creation in literature and translation (35 grants)
  • Creation in audio-visual scripts (7 grants)
  • Creation in art and science (10 grants)

The specific regulations for the call are due to be published in the second half of December. The call is open to physical and natural persons, and also to groups of people. Applications can be made between 30 December 2021 and 4 February 2022.

The Barcelona Crea grants are part of the second measure in the Barcelona Cultural Rights Plan and now become one of the regular support programmes for the cultural and creative network, such as En Residència and Barcelona Producció, by La Capella.
