Ciutat Vella’s mobility plan gets the Barcelona Provincial Council award for innovation in the management of the urban habitat

The mobility plan for Ciutat Vella has been awarded the Barcelona Provincial Council award for innovation in the management of the urban habitat. The distinction is awarded by the Architect’s Association of Catalonia (COAC) and recognises the efforts of architects or teams of architects working in local public administrations. The jury commended the project for its thoroughness, methodology and involvement of cross-cutting elements, enabling the creation of a more durable model which can be reproduced in other fields.

The award forms part of the third edition of the Barcelona Architects’ Showcase, aimed at recording, highlighting and disseminating the work of architects in the Barcelonès and Baix Llobregat areas. The initiative is promoted by the Barcelona branch of the Architect’s Association of Catalonia (COAC).

The Mobility Plan for Ciutat Vella 2018-2023 seeks to create a specific new district mobility model, achieving compatibility between quality of residential life and economic activity and addressing territorial peculiarities. Pedestrians are at the centre of the new model.

The main goal is to guarantee journeys by all citizens, particularly those most vulnerable or with reduced mobility. At the same time, the idea is to ensure commercial supply in the district. This should all be achieved through an equal and democratic mobility model which distributes the pressure and impact of mobility, reduces exclusive uses and puts everyday life at the centre of things, along with care work and production.

Special mention for the Accessible Barrier-free Commerce project

There was also a special mention for the project Accessible Barrier-free Commerce (CASBA) by the Municipal Institute for People with Disabilities, the UPC, La Salle and the International University of Catalonia. CASBA is a project to study the accessibility of commercial establishments, streets and facilities in the old quarter.

The judgement for the Barcelona and Vallès architecture showcases was announced in a ceremony in the gardens in the interior quadrangle of the Torre de les Aigües block, in the Dreta de l’Eixample neighbourhood.
