How to guarantee animal welfare at the Zoo in high temperatures?

Care at the Zoo is adapted every summer with measures to allow animals free access to shelters, freshen up their enclosures, include frozen food in their diets and more. At the same time, the Zoo is maintaining its commitment to the drought risk protocol.

The vegetation at the Zoo means temperatures there are three degrees lower than the rest of the city. Even so, additional measures need to be adopted to protect the health of the animals during very hot periods.

  • Free access to shelters and indoor areas.
  • More drinking facilities and water replenished more often.
  • More cleaning in bathing areas and mud patches.
  • Enclosures freshened up with water and, if necessary, with fans.
  • Frozen soups and juice, plus frozen fruit.

In parallel, watering restrictions and the closure of ornamental fountains remain in place in response to the current drought. These measures allow the Zoo to save 200 cubic metres of water a day.
