Sant Jordi 2025: a large space for pedestrians in the heart of the city of books and roses
Sant Jordi’s Day once again features a large traffic-free area in the city centre, with stalls selling books and roses between Av. Diagonal, Gran Via, Balmes and Pau Claris, the length of La Rambla and a section of Gran de Gràcia, from Pla Nicolás Salmerón to C/ Astúries.
All city districts will also have spaces reserved for the sale of books and roses, with establishments able to set out their stalls from 22 April:
- Ciutat Vella: La Rambla and Passeig de Lluís Companys.
- L’Eixample: Plaça de Catalunya, Plaça de la Universitat, Rambla de Catalunya, Passeig de Gràcia and Passeig de Sant Joan.
- Sants-Montjuïc: Rambla de Sants.
- Les Corts: Avinguda de la Diagonal (between Joan Güell and Pau Romeva, side nearest the sea).
- Sarrià – Sant Gervasi: Plaça de Sarrià.
- Gràcia: Gran de Gràcia (between Pla Nicolás Salmerón and Astúries) and Plaça de la Vila de Gràcia.
- Horta-Guinardó: Plaça d’Eivissa.
- Nou Barris: canopy in Via Júlia (side nearest the sea, between Argullós and Joaquim Valls) and Plaça del Virrei Amat (at the junction between Felip II and Jota).
- Sant Andreu: Pl. Orfila and Pl. Comerç, and C/ Segre (between Pont and Cinca).
- Sant Martí: Rambla del Poblenou (between Passeig de Calvell and Avinguda de la Diagonal), C/ Cabanyal and C/ Sèquia Comtal, Pl. Mercat and Pl. Font i Sagué and the space at the Biblioteca Gabriel García Márquez.
Barcelona City Council will also have stalls for Sant Jordi’s Day. In Passeig de Gràcia (between Provença and Roselló) you’ll find the latest books published and jointly published by the City Council, while at the stand in Pl. Catalunya, on the corner between Passeig de Gràcia and Ronda Sant Pere, people will be invited to write their own story to construct a collective Sant Jordi mural.
Sant Jordi 2025 gets under way with the Opening Speech on Reading, to be given this year by the Mexican writer Cristina Rivera Garza, winner of the Pulitzer Prize 2024, The author will be chatting to the cultural journalist Anna Guitart about her work and the role that reading and libraries have had in her life. The ceremony is being held in the Saló de Cent at the City Hall on Tuesday, 22 April, at 6 pm. The registration process opens on 15 April at 10 am.
The city’s districts and neighbourhoods are organising various activities over the days on and around Sant Jordi, such as concerts, workshops, literary competitions and open days at different facilities. One example is the open day at the City Hall, with free admission and open to everybody (limited capacity) on Wednesday, 23 April, from 10 am to 8 pm, allowing visitors to see parts of the building such as the Escala Negra, the Capella del Bon Consell, the Saló de Cròniques, the Sala Tàpies and the Galeria Gòtica.
There’s also a children’s show with Chinese shadow puppetry, La llegenda de Sant Jordi, from 10.30 am to 2 pm and from 3.30 pm to 5 pm, while Plaça Sant Jaume will be hosting traditional Sardana dancing from 7 pm.
Create your rose to send good wishes for Sant Jordi’s Day!
There’s a new feature this year on the Sant Jordi website allowing people to create their own story on a virtual postcard, then making a rose grown from this and sending it to whoever they wish.
