The new Barcelona Ombudsman was named after gaining a qualified majority in September’s full council meeting. The decision coincided with the backing given by the public in the citizen support process for Ombudsman candidates, where he also received majority backing.

David Bondia is a professor in International Public Law and International Relations at the University of Barcelona and chair of the Institute of Human Rights of Catalonia, among other positions in human rights organisations and bodies.

The task of the Barcelona Ombudsman is to defend people’s fundamental rights and public freedoms and supervise action by the municipal administration and its public services.
