Defending the labour rights of domestic and care workers

The municipal strategy to combat job insecurity among domestic and care workers is being bolstered with information staff on the streets and the publication of a guide to foster dignified and fair contracts.

A team of municipal information staff will be on hand in the streets of Les Corts and Sarrià – Sant Gervasi over the coming weeks to offering information and guidance on the labour rights of domestic and care workers. The service, also aimed at men, is mainly addressed at women working under live-in arrangements with irregular labour conditions.

Besides the information staff, the guide Cuidem qui ens cuida, és de justícia! Has been published, a reference document on fair and dignified contracts for domestic and care workers. The guide, already available in digital format, will be presented on 4 December.

Workers who need specialised legal advice can also go to the labour rights points in Nou Barris, Ciutat Vella and Sants-Montjuïc, where a team of lawyers from Barcelona Activa will handle their queries. Information sessions on labour rights will also be held, enabling contact with other women in the same situation.

Combatting deregulation and job insecurity

Domestic and care work are profoundly feminised sectors, where job insecurity and deregulation are common. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO), an estimated 31% of domestic work and the care of others is done by people in irregular situations. In Catalonia, domestic and care workers earn 40% less than average, reflecting a violation of dignified wages.

The goals of the information service and the guide are to highlight the situation of insecurity and poverty among domestic and care workers, which mainly affects migrant women, and to set out guidelines on labour rights which include dignified wages, regulation of the sector and respect for working hours and weekly hours of rest.
