The city pays tribute to the victims of the attack on La Rambla four years on

Pla de l’Ós, located on La Rambla, was once again the location chosen to remember and pay tribute to the victims of the attack of 17 August 2017. Families, political representatives from all municipal groups and the rest of institutions, as well as security and emergency services, took part in a ceremony with no speeches, a minute’s silence and flowers laid.

The tribute marking the fourth anniversary of the attacks in Barcelona and Cambrils was held around the memorial in La Rambla. Victims and relatives were accompanied by all those attending to lay carnations and other flowers in the garden tubs provided. The ceremony opened with a minute’s silence, accompanied by the melody of the Cant dels Ocells.

One of the city’s darkest chapters

During the afternoon of 17 August 2017, Barcelona suffered a terrorist attack in the heart of the city which left 15 dead and over a hundred wounded. Over the following days members of the public united to give their backing to the victims and their families, with demonstrations of support immediately appearing in the form of messages, flowers and various objects making up a spontaneous memorial.

Over the following months this expression of solidarity and collective memory was gathered and documented with an inventory. The material can now be visited online at the Memorial for La Rambla 17A website. The site includes 4,654 messages of solidarity, 29,000 kg of flowers, 7,838 objects and 29,763 signatures in the digital book of condolence.
