The Galeria project wins the competition to extend the MACBA in Plaça dels Àngels

The winning project redefines the museum’s Meier Building, the square and the Convent dels Àngels. The transformation of the convent and the extension means the MACBA will gain an additional 3,000 square metres of exhibition space.

The Galeria project by the architects’ studio UTE Harquitectes and Christ & Gantenbein has won the competition to define the extension to the MACBA. The project includes the transformation of the Capella dels Àngels and the construction of a new museum building to extend the convent in Plaça dels Àngels. The new space will connect with the museum’s Meier Building via an underground exhibition tunnel.

The new museum space will keep the local heritage elements, with the structure of courtyards, cloisters and buttresses for the old convents which are typical of the Raval neighbourhood.

Now the draft project, basic project and executive project will be produced for work to get under way. This is the prelude to the tendering process and the start of work, which should be in 2023.
