Barcelona Medals of Honour 2020

The Full Council unanimously awarded the twenty-five Barcelona Medals of Honour 2020, recognising sectors which have directly fought to combat Covid-19 through five awards in the city category: the Barcelona Doctors’ Association, the Barcelona Nurses’ Association, the Social Workers’ Association of Catalonia, the Board of Third Sector Social Entities of Catalonia and the Barcelona Hotel Guild.

Besides the five city medals, twenty medals of honour were awarded, corresponding to the city’s ten districts:

Ciutat Vella

  • Associació de Veïns de la Barceloneta, for its 50 years as a leading entity fighting for local residents and as a cornerstone in cohesion and the defence of citizen rights.
  • Macrina Alcedo Reconsal, in recognition for her involvement as an activist for the migrant rights and as a leading figure for the Filipino community in the neighbourhoods of Ciutat Vella and the whole city.

L’Eixample

  • Coreixample, in recognition of its 25-year history adding social and economic vitality to the area between Av. Diagonal, Gran Via and Passeig de Sant Joan.
  • Milagros Solé Laguna, for her work as a volunteer, particularly devoted to the elderly, and for helping to foster social cohesion and solidarity.

Sants-Montjuïc

  • Cross Popular de Sants, for helping to promote sport and participation as one of the most traditional and popular athletics events in Barcelona, and for its ties with neighbourhood organisations.
  • Júlia Costa, in recognition of her literary and educational work and her involvement and ties with the neighbourhood of Poble-sec.

Les Corts

  • Futbolistes Veterans de Catalunya, for their contribution to the world of sport and the values of tolerance, respect, solidarity and effort.
  • Ana Ramon Martínez, for her work in defence of the rights of local people living in the area around the Camp Nou.

Sarrià – Sant Gervasi

  • Fundació Estimia, for its integrational and social work facilitating the development of people with physical and intellectual disabilities and deaf-blind people, as well as providing support for their families.
  • Ana Tere Raventòs Chalbaud, in recognition for her work at the head of the Fundació Boscana to integrate people with intellectual disabilities.

Gràcia

  • Josep Maria Contel, for his work for the recovery of collective historical memory and his involvement with traditional and festive culture in the district of Gràcia.
  • SALUTEM – Accions comunitàries del barri de la Salut, for its 15-year history of working to strengthen the community, improve life conditions and social cohesion in the neighbourhood of La Salut.

Horta-Guinardó

  • Coral Sant Jeroni de Montbau, for the choir’s 50th anniversary and its contribution to cultural and artistic life in the Montbau neighbourhood.
  • Amical Brigades Internacionals, in recognition of their work to preserve and disseminate historical memory and defend anti-fascist and pro-international values.

Nou Barris

  • Associació Projectart, for its 35-year history of informing people and innovating in the district of Nou Barris.
  • Casal de Gent Gran de Trinitat Nova, for its 50th anniversary and its lasting role as a place for elderly people in the neighbourhood to meet and share.

Sant Andreu

  • Jose Barbero Cabello, for his work fighting for quality public education, improvements to people’s lives and facilities in the neighbourhood of La Sagrera.
  • Societat Cultural i Esportiva La Lira, for its 150-year history forming part of the cultural life and associations of the former village and current neighbourhood of Sant Andreu de Palomar.

Sant Martí

  • Salvador Mañosas Durán, for his involvement and devotion to improving and adding vitality to the neighbourhood of La Palmera and the district of Sant Martí.
  • Coordinadora d’Entitats Vern, for its community work fostering respect for others and social cohesion in the neighbourhoods of La Verneda i la Pau and Sant Martí de Provençals.

The Barcelona Medal of Honour is an award which was introduced in 1997 on the centenary of the aggregation of the villages on the Barcelona plain, to distinguish people or organisations whose professional or social work have helped develop public awareness and civic virtues and values.
