Campaign for inspecting souvenir shops

The information and disciplinary campaign targeting commercial souvenir shops is being launched in Eixample, Gràcia and Horta-Guinardó, to ensure compliance with the municipal regulations set out in the Special Plan for Souvenir Shops, which has been in force since December 2018.

Municipal inspection teams are paying information visits to souvenir shops, explaining the city’s regulations and pointing out any infringements detected. In the latter case, the teams will carry out a second inspection to check whether the appropriate adaptations have been made and, if they have not, they will then commence disciplinary proceedings.

183 inspections were carried out in the first months of the year, during which they detected as many as 40% of shops failing to comply with the new regulations. Most of the infringements were to do with the following:

  • Displaying souvenir items so they were visible from outdoor public areas.
  • Failure to group or distinguish products inside the shop.
  • Taking up over 20% of the total commercial space with souvenir items.

As from August the campaign will be extended to Ciutat Vella, where inspection visits will be carried out up to the end of year.

Regulations for protecting traditional shops

The Amendment to the Special Plan for Arranging Commercial Establishments is aimed at protecting neighbourhood shops, ensuring a balance of commercial activities, promoting residential community life and preserving the identity of the neighbourhoods in the face of the steady rise in tourism, which is distorting the authentic urban landscape.
