Full City Council Meeting to vote on tramway connection through Av Diagonal

The tramway connection through Av Diagonal is to be voted on again at the Full City Council Meeting of January 2019, after the municipal barometer showed that the measure enjoys support from 63% of the city’s residents. The municipal proposal includes a first section from Les Glòries to Verdaguer, which is backed by technical studies and enjoys a consensus from metropolitan municipalities and would represent a 58% increase in number of users.

Health is a right and the Authority has a duty to promote the use of public transport and reduce traffic through measures for improving air quality and promoting a healthy city for local residents.

This is one of the goals behind the sustainable mobility strategy that the proposed connection for the tramway through Av Diagonal is enshrined in. All the technical studies backing the efficiency of this measure have been carried out during this term of office: reduced travel time, connections with eight municipalities and greater connectivity with the entire public transport network.

From Les Glòries to Verdaguer in seven minutes

It was at the start of 2018 that the municipal government and the Metropolitan Transport Authority, the Catalan regional government’s majority-holder entity with authority over the tramway infrastructure, agreed to an action protocol for implementing the first stage: expanding the Trambesòs network up to Verdaguer.

This new tramway between Les Glòries and Verdaguer incorporated three new stops (Monumental, Sicília and Verdaguer), a seven-minute travel time, connections with four metro lines (L1 in Glòries, L2 in Monumental and L4 i L5 in Verdaguer) and connections with fifteen bus lines.

The addition of a mere 1.8 km is expected to attract 18,300 more users, some 58% more than the present figure, and bring about a substantial improvement to the range of public transport on offer for local residents and the metropolitan municipalities located along the River Besòs, especially Sant Adrià de Besòs and Badalona.

Three km to connect eight municipalities

Once completed the Trambaix and Trambesòs connection through Av Diagonal will cut fifteen minutes off the journey between Francesc Macià and Les Glòries.

What is more, the expansion of the service will double the number of users at present and enable local residents from eight metropolitan area municipalities to reach the city centre: Hospitalet de Llobregat, Esplugues de Llobregat, Cornellà de Llobregat, Sant Joan Despí, Sant Just Desvern, Sant Feliu de Llobregat, Sant Adrià de Besòs and Badalona).

Social and metropolitan consensus

Besides the agreement with the Metropolitan Transport Authority, the tramway connection through Av Diagonal enjoys a consensus from metropolitan municipalities.

In addition, 63% of local residents support the tramway connection through Av Diagonal, according to the municipal barometer; the project also enjoys the support of entities, platforms and universities.

The proposal now awaits negotiations with the municipal political party groups, who rejected it in March 2018, and a vote at the Full Municipal Meeting of January 2019.

A traffic-calmed and healthy Av Diagonal

The expansion of the Trambesòs tramway will enable the Av Diagonal Urbanisation Project between Les Glòries and Verdaguer to move forward.

The initiative would practically double the amount of space there for pedestrians, with a further 13,000 square metres, and increase the cycling network and green areas.
