How will we get about once the lockdown starts to ease?

To ensure the scaled and safe easing of the lockdown mobility measures are starting to be applied to expand the mobility spaces intended for pedestrians, to improve the bus-network and add a further 20 km of cycle lanes. The goal is to encourage travel on foot, by bike and on public transport and restrict the increased use of private vehicles in the city.

Traffic lanes are being narrowed, to provide wider spaces for pedestrians and guarantee room for social distancing, along C/ Consell de Cent, C/ Girona an C/ Rocafort, which are to become one-way and have a speed limit of 30 km/hr. Pavements along Via Laietana will also be widened, up to 4.15 metres, and traffic will close within the sections of the following streets:

  • Avinguda Diagonal: along the sea-facing side, from Plaça de Francesc Macià to Passeig de Gràcia, and along the mountain-facing side, from Passeig de Gràcia to Carrer de la Marina.
  • Gran via de les Corts Catalanes: along the sea-facing side, from Plaça d’Espanya to Plaça de Tetuan.

In all there will be an extra 12 km of space, some 30,000 square metres, for pedestrians.

Seventeen interventions are to be carried out to segregate, modify or create bus-lane sections, aimed at improving the bus network’s efficiency once the lockdown begins to ease; in addition, a disinfection, hygiene and protection protocol will apply to the entire bus fleet, to ensure social distancing between users.

The Bicing service is re-opening with 57 brand-new stations and with hygienic measures for use of bicycles. Barcelona City Council is expanding cycling lanes by 21 km distributed along some ten new sections.

The ground-level parking rates approved for 2020 will be applied and regulated ground-level parking areas expanded apply, to avoid increased use of private vehicles when the lockdown begins to ease. There will also be extra disinfections of parking meters.
