Work gets under way on the new public housing development in Trinitat Vella

Work began in October on the new flats in the area around the prison in Trinitat Vella, in the district of Sant Andreu. In this initial stage of the project, work will allow two blocks of public housing to be created to rehouse families affected by the urban regeneration of this area, who have been waiting for more than twenty years.

A total of 129 flats will be built to rehouse families living in local buildings in precarious conditions. This first stage of the project will see 41 flats built. Work on the second block of 53 homes gets under way in a few months, and once the prison is demolished the second part of the first block will be completed to add a further 35 homes.

The work comes after an agreement with the Government of Catalonia in 2021 to resume the transfer of the old Wad-Ras and Trinitat Vella prisons to the Zona Franca. When the penitentiary centre is moved definitively, the combined area of 32,560 square metres corresponding to the prison and its surroundings will have been used to build 410 homes with official protection, plus facilities for local people.
