Demolition work starts on the building on the Bac de Roda breakwater

Demolition work on the building on the Bac de Roda breakwater, between La Mar Bella and La Nova Mar Bella beaches, is to start in the next few days, freeing up de 537 square metres of space. The structure is currently not in use and has deteriorated as a result of Storm Gloria, which struck the city in 2020.

The demolition of this building, which is being carried out through Barcelona Cicle de l’Aigua, SA (BCASA), represents yet another initiative to adapt the city to climate change and which Barcelona needs to adopt to prevent more serious effects from storms.

The work will commence on 5 September, at the end of the high bathing season, to minimise any possible inconvenience to bathers. It is expected to finish in December.

A 1992 Olympic Games building

The building that is to be pulled down had been used as a restaurant and was constructed to mark the 1992 Barcelona Olympic Games and Barcelona’s coastal remodelling. The concession for its construction and use, however, expired in June 2019. Storm Gloria caused serious damage to its structure and terrace. In addition, a fire broke in the facility when it was closed, in August 2020. In view of all this, the Department of Beaches went ahead with cleaning and closing off the building and with signposting the area to prevent people from accessing it.

The demolition will also be complemented with the transformation of the future Passeig Marítim de la Mar Bella.
