Traffic closure on C/ Muntaner due to construction work on L8

From this Sunday, 10 August, C/ Muntaner will be closed to traffic as work begins on extending the L8 line of the Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat (FGC) between Espanya and Gràcia. The affected stretch runs between C/ Laforja and Carrer de Marià Cubí, where the Department of Territory, Housing and Ecological Transition of the Generalitat is building a new emergency exit for the upcoming tunnel excavation. Construction is expected to last around 13 months.

The closure on C/ Muntaner will impact one of the main connections between Via Augusta and Av. Diagonal. To help ease congestion in the area, the City Council and Generalitat have introduced a series of measures. The most significant is a change in the direction of traffic on C/ Amigó, between Via Augusta and Trav. Gràcia, which has been in effect since 27 July.

The change in circulation means that vehicles coming from Via Augusta will be able to turn into C/ Amigó in the direction of the sea before reaching C/ Muntaner, creating a new descending connection between Via Augusta and Trav. Gràcia and Av. Diagonal. This change in direction will also generate an alternative route for the TMB V13 bus line, which currently circulates in the descending direction in C/ Muntaner. From 10 August, this service will circulate along Muntaner as far as C/ Madrazo before joining C/ Amigó as far as Trav. Gràcia.

The mobility operation by the City Council and the Generalitat also anticipates a second lane in Via Augusta between Muntaner and Balmes in the direction of the Besòs, facilitating the diversion of vehicles circulating in the direction of the sea towards Balmes.

Barcelona City Council has launched a new campaign with information staff in the vicinity to explain the changes to people and resolve any doubts or queries.

L8 emergency exit

C/ Muntaner will be closed between the streets of Laforja and Marià Cubí, where the Generalitat is to build a new emergency exit for the L8 line of the FGC rail network, which is being extended from Pl. Espanya to Gràcia.

The work will connect the Llobregat-Anoia and Vallès FGC lines and improve public transport connection in the area, with a new 4 km tunnel linking Espanya and Gràcia, plus new stations at Hospital Clínic, Francesc Macià and Gràcia. The tunnel will have two emergency exits: one in C/ Comte d’Urgell wih C/ Consell de Cent and the other in C/ Muntaner. The project entails an investment of over 400 million euros.
