El Prat airport wants to fly even furtherIntercontinental flights at El Prat airport grew by 29% between 2015 and 2017, accounting for 7.2 million passengers and meeting the strategic goal set by the Barcelona Air Route Development Committee for the same period. With a view to the next two years, a new plan aims to add new destinations and improve existing connections.
Over the last 12 years, the number of long-haul destinations has tripled, rising from 17 in 2005 to 45 last year, a record to date. During this period, direct flights have started operating to Seoul, Shanghai, Washington, San Francisco, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Lima, Teheran and Banjul, while more frequent flights are also now being operated to key destinations such as New York. The frequency of intercontinental flights has also continued to grow and now stands at 286 a week.
New intercontinental connections with Boston and Seoul are due to start operating in 2018 and existing connections will also be extended with bigger planes and more frequent flights. The strategic plan for 2018-2019 aims to secure direct flights to Tokyo and Mexico, as well as Bangkok, Santiago de Chile and different destinations in India.
The Barcelona Air Route Development Committee is made up of the Government of Catalonia, Barcelona Chamber of Commerce and the City Council. Its goal is to promote international connections from the airport in the Catalan capital.
