Electric vehicles to drive sustainable mobilityThe electric mobility strategy responds to the need for safe, sustainable, equal and efficient mobility. The aim is to promote the use of electric vehicles in public and private sectors, to improve recharging facilities and provide backing for the development of the electric mobility industry. The measures will be applied between now and 2024 and will affect all motorised transport in the city.
The strategy includes a commitment to increase the amount of electric vehicles in the municipal fleet to 80% in 2024, with the current roll-out due to achieve 35% this year. The fleet consists of 1,500 cleaning and refuse collection vehicles, as well as water and lighting maintenance vehicles and those belonging to the affiliated company B:SM.
As for public transport, the goal is to increase the current total of four electric buses to 100 vehicles in 2024, and for the entire fleet to use zero-emissions buses by 2040.
The measures to be applied to the taxi sector mean limits to the issuing of licences: diesel vehicles will not be authorised as from 2019 and from 2024 onwards only electric taxis will be authorised.
The report highlights the effort this sector has made in recent years to adapt to a more sustainable mobility model. At present, 28.3% of taxis are hybrid vehicles.
Cars, motorbikes and goods vehicles
The overall goals of the strategy are based around a gradual increase in private electric vehicles, rising from the current figure of 1,057 to 24,000 electric cars in 2024, as well as incentivising the use of electric motorbikes.
The measures to achieve those goals focus on extending the recharging infrastructure for vehicles, introducing parking benefits for these vehicles, priority lanes and recharging, subsidies for vehicles using alternative energy and more road tax discounts.
Regarding goods vehicles, electric mobility will be promoted via the construction of specific recharging facilities and financial incentives, as well as mobility limitations on conventional vehicles in the city.
Advantages of electric vehicles
The roll-out of electric mobility, in line with the city’s Urban Mobility Plan, helps achieve a mobility model which is more sustainable and respectful to the environment. The benefits include less noise and air pollution, less dependency on petroleum-based fuels and a boost for renewable energy.
