Espai Boqueria, the new training and dissemination room to take the market to the locals

Barcelona’s biggest market has a brand-new feature, the Espai Boqueria, a 50-square-metre classroom with glass walls where training and dissemination activities can be organised, and which interacts with the rest of the market. The room has been conceived as a meeting point between local people and gastronomy professionals.

The new room is aimed at people who live in the city, enabling them to engage further with the market and with stallholders and city restaurateurs, who can use it as a place for presenting new developments in produce and practices.

The room will have its own annual programme, with all sorts of activities such as training sessions, workshops, presentations, talks and debates. It is designed as a space for people to use and is open to the whole city, from schools to civil and social organisations to companies and other institutions wishing to arrange activities there. The Mercat de la Boqueria Traders Association will be responsible for daily management.

The Espai Boqueria is located in the former fish stall area on the side of the market by C/ Morera, where fourteen empty stalls were demolished to make way for it. The project was part of the distribution strategy for the market, with the idea of creating spaces within spaces and making the building more pleasant and comfortable so that local people go there to do their daily shopping.

The inauguration of this space signals the resumption of the celebrations for the 180th anniversary of the market, scheduled for early in the year but interrupted when the state of emergency for Covid-19 came into force. All the activities have had to be adapted to the new reality and need to be reserved in advance. They can be found on the Boqueria anniversary website.
