Exhibition "La ciutat dels passatges. Abans de la Via Laietana
The Arxiu Fotogràfic de Barcelona presents the exhibition “La ciutat dels passatges. Abans de la Via Laietana” (City of Alleys. Before Via Laietana), a selection from the winning series of photographs entered in the concurs a competition run by the City Council towards the end of January 1908 with the aim of documenting all the streets, squares and homes that would have to be demolished to make way for the Via Laietana. The photographs were taken by Adolf Mas, Joan F. Rovira, Carles Passos, Narcís Cuyàs, Josep Pons Escrigas, Miquel Matorrodona, and others whose identities remain unknown.
The photographs make up a unique record of an area long gone. This makes these photos one of the most important collections from Barcelona’s photographic heritage, also charged with the symbolism of the end of an era and the conflict between the city’s elite and working classes.
