Green light to revamp the Balconada del Moll de la Fusta

The project to revamp the Balconada del Moll de la Fusta, in the Gòtic neighbourhood, has made its way through the Government Commission. The area covers 7,460 square metres and will be given a stronger role as a recreational space for local residents, integrating the urban layout and the seafront.

The remodelling project includes the 600-long stretch between the end of La Rambla and Via Laietana, which will cease to be a transitory space and instead become a recreational area with shaded areas to make it a more pleasant place for locals, more greenery, new activity areas, a new utility network and new lighting.

  • The Sala: a space for people to sit in, with a linear arrangement of benches.
  • The Umbracle: a covered area of 1,200 square metres, offering shade for activities such as gymnastics for the elderly, children’s events, local festivals and other celebrations.
  • The Pati: a space will be freed up on the other side of the Umbracle for a multi-purpose recreation area, free of obstacles, for use by local schools or to organise temporary activities.
  • The Jardí de Medinaceli: this space is designed to green up the area and extend Pl. Duc de Medinaceli as far as the sea. It will have a children’s play area, two petanque courts and a book exchange area.
  • The scooter circuit: a track for scooters, with various routes.

The project will also be carried out with an approach based around recycling as many elements as possible, equipping public space, making lighting more welcoming and organising the flow of people to facilitate mobility on foot.

Work will get under way in the second quarter of 2019 and is due to conclude halfway through 2020. The project has a budget of 2.4 million euros.

A seafront for local residents

The remodelling of the Balconada del Moll de la Fusta is part of the Neighbourhood Plan for the Raval Sud and the Gòtic Sud, which aims to combat inequalities between areas and enhance daily life for local residents.

The project is also the first of the measures in the agreement between the City Council and  Port de Barcelona to reactivate local people’s use of the seafront and improve its integration with the city’s urban layout.
