Historic records for the Barcelona area public transport system at the end of 2019
The metro was close to 412 million journeys, a rise of 1.1%, while bus use went up 4% to 211.1 million.
Today, the Metropolitan Transport Authority (ATM) announced the changes in demand in the last 12 months, with new records in the field of mobility in the Barcelona area: the public transport system closed 2019 with over 1,056 million journeys undertaken, 3% more than in the previous year.
Public transport is continuing to increase its multimodal presence at a time when sustainability plays a key social role and efficient public transport is essential. In relation to this, all operators in the network have seen significant growth in the last 12 months.
2.17% rise in metro and bus use
The Barcelona Metropolitan Transport (TMB) metro and buses closed the year with an aggregate growth in demand of 2.1%, which is equivalent to 12.6 million more journeys than in the previous year. We are talking of a total of 623 million passengers between the two networks (excluding leisure-related transport).
As far as tickets are concerned, ATM integrated tickets still account for more than 75% of all tickets in the Barcelona area public transport network. Over this last year, the slight fall in the use of multi-journey tickets, such as the T-10 or T-50/30 cards, has continued to increase, while season and concession tickets, such as the T-mes and T-jove cards, have risen and now account for a total of 27% of all annual tickets in the integrated fare system.
