Improvements at Park Güell: nearly 39 million euros between 2023 and 2027
Works planned at Park Güell include measures inside the park and in facilities in the surrounding area, the goal being to minimise the impact that tourist activity has on local people in the area. The 39 million euros in investment comes wholly from the park’s activity, where BSM has controlled access since 2013. The park gets 4.4 million visitors a year.
Defined in 2017, the Park Güell strategic plan includes 203 measures. At present, 59% have already been executed, 18% have been activated and 23% are still to be started.
Updated spaces
The work inside the park entails an investment of 13.7 million euros to improve lighting, the system to reuse rainwater and drainage, for a more efficient watering system and to boost the maintenance of greenery and the protection of biodiversity.
A sum of 10.4 million will also be invested in two significant actions: the expropriation of the Casa Trias and the construction of the new technical centre for the park’s services, including a multi-purpose space for local people.
La Miranda has also been acquired to hand over its management to the organisation which has been running activities there for two decades.
More accessible surroundings
In terms of work in the area around the park, an investment of 13.7 million euros will be made to renew surfaces, pavements and other elements.
Measures include regaining the Jardins de la Font del Carbó, in La Salut, to facilitate connection across the neighbourhood; the remodelling of C/ Torrent del Remei and C/ Farigola, in the neighbourhood of El Coll, including wider pavements for improved accessibility, and the improvement of C/ Albert Llanas and C/ Miguel dels Sants Oliver, in the neighbourhood of Can Baró, with improvements in accessibility.
More measures to protect local residents and commerce
Park Güell has been included in the strategy for busy spaces (EGA), with various actions executed as part of this plan.
Extra buses on two sections of the V19 route on Saturdays and public holidays have cut crowding on this service by 40%.
The enlargement of the restricted access area in the neighbourhood of La Salut and the rearrangement of taxi ranks are other measures which have already been implemented.
Use of the park by local people has also been promoted, with activities such as the Gràcia Sports Festival 2024.
Access for local people as a priority
Free access to the park continues to be guaranteed for the people of Barcelona through the “Bon dia, Barcelona” and “Bon vespre, Barcelona” time slots exclusively for local people, plus the local residents card and the Gaudir Més programme.
