The goal of the Montserrat Roig Awards is to promote and incentivise quality of information, placing the focus on a better treatment of social topics in the media. The awards share out 40,000 euros in all: 7,000 euros for first prizes, 3,000 euros for second prizes and 10,000 for each of the two research projects to be developed during the year. The jury’s special prize carries no monetary value.

The Montserrat Roig Awards 2021 went to the following:

The Montserrat Roig Award for social journalism went to the documentary La Gemma té un pla, broadcast by the TV3 programme Sense Ficció and directed by Arantza Diez, for its narrative strength and for moving viewers and transmitting emotions while engaging people with the topic of emigration.

The second prize for social journalism went to the programme Bàsics: l’emergència d’habitatge a Barcelona en 12 històries, by Betevé, for the way it addresses this issue from different perspectives.

The Montserrat Roig Award for social communication went to the Associació Publicitarios Implicados for the campaign “D’utopia a referent” because, in addition to the interest of the project, the work was also carried out selflessly.

The second prize for social communication went to the project “N’hem de parlar, parlar i tornar a parlar”, by Maria Escala, a well-executed clear and simple campaign with a very good explanation of how to act when confronted by a suicide attempt.

The Montserrat Roig Awards for the promotion of journalistic research in the sphere of social welfare in the city went to two projects which should be developed in the coming months:

    • “De qui són els pisos a Barcelona”, by the Crític cooperative, a research project on home ownership in the city, regarded as a solid and coherent project with an initial part of the information already gathered and developed.
    • “Cuidar la mort”, a project by Núria Gebellí, Anna Celma, Estel·la Marcos and Meritxell Rigol which explores how the legal, business, institutional and social conditions surrounding a death make it difficult to care for those who suffer a loss.

The jury’s special prize, which recognises a project defined by its sensitivity, rigour, and commitment, went to the digital newspaper 5W for its trajectory, publication of high-quality works and efficiency in web dissemination.
