More pupils and teachers for the new school year

The 2019-2020 school year gets under way on Thursday, 12 September, with 178,487 students enrolled at the city’s schools, almost 1,700 more than last year. There are new schools this year, with the Institut La Sagrera Sant Andreu opening its doors for the first time, while the Institut Escola Arts and the Institut Pedralbes have been created by merging other centres.

The school year starts with 411 schools providing compulsory education. There are 236 publicly run centres (167 schools, 6 schools offering primary and secondary education, 61 secondary schools and 2 integrated centres), as well as 175 state-subsidised private schools. There are also 34 special education centres, 8 of them publicly run centres and 26 state-subsidised private centres.

The team of teaching staff has also grown, rising from 9,121 to 9,254 and meaning 133 more teachers than last year. The number of administration and service staff has also gone up.

Improvements at schools

Work has been carried out at 100 of the city’s 297 publicly run schools over the summer. There has been 50 million euros invested in all, with a municipal input of 34,308,907 euros accompanied by 15,836,948 from the Government of Catalonia. All schools will be opening on 12 September, with only a few cases where work will continue during the school year, as set out in the initial calendar.

Backing innovation

This is the first time that all schools have taken part in Xarxes per al Canvi, a programme supporting educational consolidation and transformation during the 2019-2020 school year so that in the next few years centres can be fully involved in a networked project to improve sustainability.

Support for inclusive education

This year has seen 21,655 pupils in vulnerable situations and specific support needs enrol for compulsory education. Of these, 93.3% are enrolled at ordinary schools and 6.7% at special education centres, progressing in a more inclusive education system with more support than in ordinary centres.

A new special education centre will be providing support for inclusion at ordinary centres this year and nine new support teams are being set up for intensive schooling (SIEI). These teams join staff at schools and offer resources for pupils with special education needs.

Educational equity

This year also brings a new shock plan against school segregation, to move towards educational equity between city schools with more unequal distributions of pupils in vulnerable situations.

The shock plan has introduced measures such as:

  • Pre-allocation of first-year infant school (P3) and secondary school (ESO) places for all students in vulnerable situations.
  • Equal distribution of enrolments in the education network, meaning equal distribution by zone instead of according to vacancies at each school.
  • Consolidation of a less bureaucratic system, which directly guarantees things such as reservation of places, exemption of school fees, free school dinners and extra-curricular activities for pupils identified by social services.

School dinner subsidies will again be awarded to all students in underprivileged socio-economic circumstances during the 2019-2020 school year.
