New municipal shelter for homeless young people

The ‘Llar d’Oportunitats’ project provides the city with a new social and educational service for young homeless people, with a capacity for 40 young adults between the ages of 18 and 23 with a high degree of social vulnerability and a lack of protection. The centre will operate around the clock, 365 days a year.

The new shelter is an educational and social recovery project for young people with a high degree of vulnerability, without adult support figures, unfamiliar with the support network and living rough. This may be made worse through their not knowing the language and difficulties in being able to regularise their situation.

The goal is to support young people individually, beyond covering their basic needs, providing them with the tools for their socialisation and creating new opportunities for them to get their lives back on track. The youngsters will be referred to the centre from municipal social teams which work in the street.

The new centre was possible thanks to collaboration between the Fundació de la Santa Creu, responsible for the facilities at the centre, and the social organisation Superacció, which will run the shelter.

The new municipal facility has a budget of roughly 1.96 million euros a year and will be jointly funded by the Catalan government’s Ministry of Labour, Social Affairs and Families. It provides continuity for the resource set up in Montgat as an exceptional measure during the Covid-19 pandemic.
