New observation deck to see Glòries transformed into a large green lung

The new Glòries observation deck offers a chance to view the transformation of the area into a large green traffic-calmed space for everyone. The first stage of the work should be ready in March and brings 45,000 square metres of green space for public use and recreation. The vantage point also enables users to see the remodelling project to calm the first section of Av. Meridiana.

Visits to the Glòries observation deck, a temporary structure offering a panoramic view of the whole area from a height of six metres, are free, and are being offered on the first Saturday of each month from 10 am to 2 pm, starting on 12 January.

The access to the observation deck is located in the corridor through the work site in the square, in front of the Museu del Disseny. Visits will be conducted in groups of thirty people, with help from information staff. The deck is adapted for people with reduced mobility.

Green lung

The revamp in Glòries started with the Gran Clariana, a big clearing in the area on the mountain-facing side which includes over 45,000 square metres of green space for public use and recreation.

  • Gran Clariana: an open grassy clearing covering a hectare, for various uses.
  • Biodiversity nodes with trees and vegetation.
  • First section of the Rambla dels Encants: a new pedestrian and cycling avenue connecting the northern and southern sections of the park.
  • Children’s play area.
  • Sports and play area for young people, with games tables, a multi-purpose sports court, loan of sports equipment, toilets and a bar.
  • Dog zone.

So far, 59% of the work for the first stage has been completed, with the rest on schedule and due to be ready in March.

Traffic calming

Work on the road tunnels underneath Pl. Glòries, which will move the current volume of 90,000 vehicles per day below ground, is now 45% complete.

Besides cutting air and noise pollution in the vicinity, the work will free up space for the second stage of the urban park, with new spaces for vegetation and an interchange facility for public transport.

Housing and facilities

The transformation of Glòries also includes public housing and various educational and cultural facilities.

These include the Encants nursery school, currently under construction, and housing with social rents, with four blocks and a total of 225 flats.

A more sustainable Meridiana

The new observation deck also enables visitors to follow the remodelling project for Av. Meridiana between Pl. Glòries and C/ Mallorca, so far 47% complete and due to be finished in March.

The revamp to this first section wins back 52,000 square metre of public space and helps connect neighbourhoods, with a tree-lined central avenue, walking and rest areas, segregated bike lanes, wider pavements and more greenery.
