The replacement of 3,600 square metres of paving at the Mercat de la Boqueria took ten weeks and was completed in two stages, enabling the market to remain operative. The new paving consists of an agglomerated asphalt base with resin and a dry granite finish to guarantee its durability.

The work came in addition to other improvements, such as the construction and launch of the Gastronomy Classroom, the renewal of lighting and the renovation and improvement of sewerage.

At the same time, work is currently in progress to install systems to control pigeons in the building’s structure, which is open to the outside and prone to nesting and bird activity. This work is due to be completed halfway through the year.

Improvements around the network of municipal markets

The Barcelona Institute of Municipal Markets (IMMB) is to invest 4.5 million euros on improvements to the network of municipal markets in 2023. Work includes painting vertical and horizontal surfaces, replacing some doors and handrails and improvements to some skylights.

A total of 100 million euros will have been spent on improving and renovating municipal markets over the last four years, a record figure representing one in every four euros of the maintenance budget for the IMMB.
