More shade in public space: over 50,000 square metres between now and 2027

The shade programme should create nearly 200 spaces with shade between now and 2027, seventy of them before this summer. Children’s play areas are a priority, as are school playgrounds and streets and squares which are particularly vulnerable and get intensive public use. The programme is one of the measures in the climate plan to adapt the city to the effects of climate change.

Shade reduces the heat island effect, facilitates energy savings in buildings and promotes the use of public space. As part of the Pla Clima, the shade programme has been designed and in 2025 should see shade systems introduced in 66 children’s play areas, 15 school playgrounds and three large spaces in the city: Plaça del Mar, Rambla del Carmel and the paved concrete area at the station of sant Andreu Comtal.

Some 62% of public space currently has shade. Of the other 39%, half quite urgently needs the installation of shade elements for the activity that goes on there or for the intense radiation found there. Specific shade solutions are chosen according to the needs and possibilities of each space.

Trees as a priority

Wherever possible, trees will be planted to generate the shade needed. This is a priority option as it is the healthiest and most sustainable one.

If planting trees is not possible, there are various other options: fixed structures with solar panels on them to create shade and generate energy at the same time, temporary structures for the hottest months, based on the installation of awnings and unique and specific shade elements for spaces with special characteristics, to be decided on with a public competition.

Temperatures will be monitored in some spaces with temporary shade structures, before and after their installation, to gauge the effectiveness of improvements.

With a budget of 13 million euros, the shade programme is part of the Pla Clima and is designed to combat excessive heat and improve temperatures in the summer. Other measures in this direction include climate shelters and air-conditioning in schools.
