Preventive warning activated for PM10 pollution
On Monday, 23 June, the Government of Catalonia’s Directorate-General for Environmental Quality and Climate activated a preventative warning for an air pollution episode caused by PM10.
The Air Pollution Monitoring and Forecasting Network in Catalonia (XVPCA) has recorded high levels of particulate matter with a diameter inferior to 10 micrometres (PM10). Given the situation, Barcelona City Council has issued a series of recommendations for the public to help improve the environment and air quality, and to avoid generating more particulate matter.
Recommendations to improve air quality
Citizens are advised to avoid using private vehicles and instead opt for public transport, walking or cycling along streets with lower traffic levels. If there is no alternative, car sharing is recommended. At the same time, drivers are encouraged to drive more efficiently (gradual acceleration, lower speeds, use gears to slow down, avoid abrupt acceleration and braking etc.).
People are also advised to adjust home heating and cooling systems. Individuals who are especially sensitive to air pollution are encouraged to move their exercise routines to times of day when pollutant levels are lower, such as in the evening or at night.
What is particulate matter and where does it come from?
Particulate matter of less than 10 micrometres in diameter (PM10) are solid or liquid micro particles which float in the air. Up to 40% is generated by motors, tyres and vehicle brakes. The rest comes from dust generated by construction and demolition sites and, occasionally, from Saharan dust clouds.
