Public competition to find the new manager for the Fundació Mies van de Rohe
As Barcelona prepares to become the World Capital of Architecture for 2026, the Fundació Mies van der Rohe has launched an international call to find the person who will direct the institution. The process is open until 11 April 2023 and is expected to be resolved between the end of June and early July.
The recruitment process will have two stages. In the first, a commission of experts will assess the merits and skills of candidates, while the second stage will consist of interviews. Finally, the commission will propose the best candidates to the chair of the foundation.
The commission of experts will be made up of:
- Jordi Ros, vice-rector of the UPC
- Guim Costa, deacon of the COAC
- Joachim Jäger, assistant director of the Neue Nationalgalerie
- Sònia Frías, manager of Urban Ecology
- Xavier Matilla Ayala, chief architect
- Lídia García, manager of Urban Ecology Resources
- Antoni Garijo, support for the Delegated Expert Commission
The competition is expected to be resolved between the end of June and early July, with the next municipal term of office already under way.
Vision of the city’s role as the capital of architecture
The person chosen as the manager of the foundation will be tasked with driving new programmes and developing the strategic areas of the organisation. They will also take on the challenge of defining and implementing the programme of activities for Barcelona during its year at the World Capital of Architecture, in 2026.
The Fundació Mies van der Rohe was created by Barcelona City Council in 1983 to rebuild the German Pavilion, designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Lilly Reich for the Barcelona Universal Expo of 1929. Besides conserving the building, the foundation promotes and creates awareness on matters relating to architecture and urban planning, and also organises awards, congresses, exhibitions, workshops and installations.
