Competition for projects for the new Biblioteca Sofia Barat resolved
The competition was for the draft project to recondition and renovate the Taller Masriera building at C/ Bailèn, 70-71, to establish a social and cultural facility in the Dreta de l’Eixample neighbourhood catering for various needs and including the Biblioteca Sofia Barat, a theatre and function room and a community space for use by local people.
The winning project seeks to green up the facility, recover the original temple garden, create a shared forum space in the historical foyer, organise the different uses by floor and recover the Teatre Studium as a theatre for nearly 300 people and a multi-purpose function room for the library.
The project from the Estudi Länk Arquietextes SCP + DATAAE was the winner among the ten final projects in the ideas competition to renovate this listed building. The decision was reached by a jury of representatives for the District of L’Eixample, Biblioteques de Barcelona, Patrimoni, COAC, local people and BIMSA. The winning team will produce the draft project during this term of office, paving the way for the renovation of the Taller Masriera building.
The current Biblioteca Sofia Barat has 555 square metres of floor space. With a catchment area of more than 44,000 inhabitants and a density of 207 inhabitant per hectare, Catalonia’s public library standards mean the facility should have 1,600 square metres of useful space. Because of this, the Master Plan for Libraries in Barcelona 2030 approved the creation of a new building. The move to the Taller Masriera building will allow the facility to meet Catalonia’s public library standards.
The District of L’Eixample, the Barcelona Library Consortium and Plataforma Masriera have worked together throughout the process to create a new facility with shared uses that responds to all the needs of the Dreta de L’Eixample neighbourhood.
