On Monday February 12th, the Antiga Fàbrica Estrella Damm hosted the presentation of the fourth edition of Unirun, a race for university students. This athletics event held on March 4 sets out to create new challenges for the university athletics community. The route goes from the Sant Martí district in Barcelona to Sant Adrià del Besòs.

The event is clearly inspired by the classic Oxford and Cambridge boat race, the rowing competition between two prestigious British universities. The Unirun, however, involves twelve Catalan universities running a 6,779-metre race, which is the same distance covered by the boat race.

The twelve participating universities include eight from Barcelona: University of Barcelona (UB), Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB), Polytechnic University of Barcelona (UPC), Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), Abad Oliva CEU University (CEU), International University of Catalonia (UIC), Ramon Llull University (URL) and Open University of Catalonia. The other four are University of Lleida, University of Girona, Rovira i Virgili University and University of Vic.

University competition

One of the event’s main features is that, in addition to registering as an individual, every participant has to run for one of the twelve universities, turning the race into a competition between universities, a lot like the Corribarri race between the city’s neighbourhoods.
