Awareness campaign on responsible ownership and cutting anti-social behaviour for World Dog Day
This year we’re marking World Dog Day (21 July) with an intensive awareness campaign on 21 and 22 in different spaces used by large numbers of dogs all around the city. A group of 16 information staff will be offering information on responsible pet ownership and giving out a total of 2,000 packs of bags for clearing up dog dirt.
The awareness and information campaign is part of the Pla Endreça and aims to make people more aware about responsible ownership and the need to improve coexistence between people and animals. The goal is to cut anti-social behaviour and promote awareness about being jointly responsible for urban space, encouraging owners to clear up dog dirt and wash away urine with water.
Barcelona currently gas 190 dog areas, including dog recreation areas and shared use areas (ZUC), where animals can be let off their leads during certain hours of the day. In addition, during the peak bathing season from 21 May to 11 September there is a specific dog area at the Llevant beach, open from 10.30 am to 7.30 pm.
Barcelona City Council organises information and awareness campaigns aimed at members of the public, underlining the need for the responsible ownership of animals, as well as respectful behaviour that guarantees coexistence in public space. The regulation sets out the obligation to clear up dog dirt and contemplates fines of up to 600 euros.
