Over a hundred species in danger of extinction in Catalonia

The Barcelona Zoo Foundation took part in the study ‘The status of biodiversity in Spain’, which identified 27 species in critical danger of extinction and 84 in danger of extinction in Catalonia. Coordinated by the Loro Parque Fundación’s Macronesia Species Survival Centre and the Spanish Committee of the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the study was published today on the occasion of the International Day for Biological Diversity.

According to The status of biodiversity in Spain, Arthropods are the most endangered taxonomic group in Catalonia, with 33 species, followed by sharks and rays, with 26, and plants, with 14.

The study also identifies various hotspots where biodiversity is critically endangered:

  • Delta de l’Ebre
  • Parc Natural de la Serra del Montsant
  • Parc Natural del Montseny
  • Some areas of the Parc Natural del Cap de Creus and the Parc Natural de l’Alt Pirineu

The research forms the basis for the UICN’s red list of endangered species, which currently establishes 193 critically endangered species, 418 endangered species and 498 vulnerable species in the Spanish state.

The work has enabled existing scientific data and criteria to be unified, improving the scientific information available and harmonising the indicators on the loss of biodiversity from different administrations and organisations involved in protecting the environment.
