The growth in the number of visitors to Barcelona Zoo was consolidated in 2022, with figures rising in comparison to pre-pandemic levels from 2019. The Zoo also saw an increase in the number of family visitors and families subscribing to the annual membership with the Zoo Club. The number of members rose 65% compared to 2021, reaching 81,447 members and 23,192 families.

More activities for children and young people

Participation in activity camps for children over Easter, Summer and Christmas recovered in 2022, with 1,152 children in all. The site also hosted the STEAM days to promote science vocations among young people, with over 600 youngsters taking part.

New science and biodiversity conservation projects

The last year has seen the Zoo create new spaces and activities to promote awareness on the care of fauna and species in danger of extinction and the conservation of biodiversity. Examples of this include the new interpretation circuit at the Sahel Discovery Centre, offering in-depth knowledge on the savannah in this bioregion, or the new space for invertebrates with over 33 species from different habitats and climates. The demolition of the former Aquarama also began in the summer, with the space to become a large reserve for animals.

The Zoo took part in different projects to reintroduce seven native species to their natural habitat, with 362 animals returned to their environment, such as the Montseny brook newt. The facility also collaborated on forty projects to preserve threatened species.
