Work gets under way to demolish the Aquarama at the Zoo

Work begins to dismantle the facility which hosted shows featuring marine animals between 1968 and 2015 and which has been inoperative since then. An animal reserve of 3,500 square metres will be built in its place.

The demolition process will be carried out using machinery which reduces noise and vibrations, keeping the environmental impact to a minimum to ensure the well-being of the animals at the Zoo. The work should take four months and involves a budget of 365,000 euros.

The facility will be replaced with an animal reserve of 3,500 square metres, with various spaces to recreate different habitats, including climate-controlled zones and technical rooms.

Spaces in the reserve will be adapted to satisfy the needs of the species which live in them, provisionally those affected by the improvement work in the coming years, with priority given to their health and welfare.

The work should take from the autumn of 2023 to the summer of 2024 and cost 800,000 euros.

A reserve adapted to the new model at the Zoo

The new space adapts to the goals of the new model for the Zoo, based on the transformation of a substantial part of the facilities to turn the site into a centre for the preservation of biodiversity, directly contributing to conservation, scientific research and dissemination relating to wild fauna and its natural habitats, particularly native species. A month ago, the Zoo opened a new Invertebrates Space, designed for families to visit.
