New bike lane in Carrer de Sants, between Riera Blanca and Arizala

Work on the new bike lane starts on 6 June and will last until the end of July. The project is included in the Urban Mobility Plan, one of the goals of which is to expand and improve the city’s network of bike lanes. There are currently 32.6 kilometres of bike lanes under construction, with improvements being made to 11.7 kilometres of existing lanes to achieve a network of 272 kilometres of bike lanes in Barcelona in 2023.

This will be a new segregated one-way section, providing continuity for the bike lane in Carrer de Sants and the metropolitan lane linking Esplugues, L’Hospitalet and Barcelona via Carretera de Collblanc.

In the direction of L’Hospitalet, the bike lane will use a specific segregated strip in the side lane nearest the mountains. In the direction of the city centre, the existing shared bus/taxi/bike lane will be maintained. Work should be completed at the end of July.

During the nights from 6 to 8 July, Carrer de Sants will be closed to traffic so that lines for the lane can be painted, with vehicles to be diverted using Travessera de les Corts – Arístides Maillol. As from 19 July, the surface of the new section of bike lane between Av. Madrid and C/ Arizala will be laid and then painted. During the nights of 19 to 22 July, junctions will be painted, and road markings painted between Riera Blanca and Av. Madrid. Finally, from 19 to 26 July, signage and lane separators will be installed and aligned with the bollards.

The work will also be used to improve the traffic light network in this area, meaning some disruptions on pavements but with the movement of pedestrians guaranteed.

In parallel to the enlargement and improvement of bikes lanes, more bike parking is also being added in the city’s ten districts. Bike parking spaces in public streets and squares currently numbers 38,904.

The city’s bike lane infrastructure has doubled since 2015, reaching a network of 240 kilometres.
