New reflective road surface to combat urban heat

A new road surface which absorbs less solar radiation has been laid in a section of C/ Martí i Franquès, in the district of Les Corts. The efficiency of this pilot project and its reduction of the heat island effect will be analysed before applying it in other city streets. The project comes as part of the Pla Clima.

The pilot project is being carried out in C/ Martí i Franquès, between C/ Menéndez i Pelayo and C/ Baldiri i Reixac. It consists of a new road surface in two different sections: one with a special new reflective material and another with conventional black asphalt. The configuration will allow for a direct comparison of the differences in temperature and thermal behaviour between the two materials under real conditions of urban use.

Developed with technical support from the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), the new surface has the capacity to reflect much more solar radiation compared to conventional asphalt, helping to reduce the surface temperature and, in turn, the environmental temperature of the immediate vicinity. This is particularly relevant in dense urban settings, where dark asphalt, buildings and traffic generate build-ups of heat known as the urban heat island effect.

The ultimate goal of this project is to assess whether this type of surface can effectively help to improve temperatures in public space. If it proves effective, its gradual rollout will be considered in other parts of the city, particularly in areas most vulnerable to high temperatures.

The initiative is part of the measures set out in the Barcelona Pla Clima, the municipal roadmap to adapt the city to climate change, reduce pollutant emission and increase urban resilience. With up to 1,800 million euros anticipated in investment between now and 2030, the plan includes measures such as the promotion of urban greenery, making spaces more natural, the energy renovation of buildings and the use of innovative materials to protect people’s health and well-being.
